Navy frigate8/30/2023 ![]() ![]() On May 20, 2021, a contract option was awarded for the second frigate, USS Congress (FFG 63). The frigate Chesapeake was launched on 2 December 1799 at the Gosport Navy Yard, Virginia, and commissioned on with Captain Samuel Barron in command. But Congress in Fiscal Year 2022 legislation mandated a pause on the second yard effort, arguing the Navy must mature the design before bringing in a second shipbuilder. ![]() The program is transitioning from functional to detail design with Critical Design and Production Readiness Reviews planned prior to the start of lead ship construction in fiscal 2022. The HCFP will provide the Australian Defence Force with the highest levels of anti-submarine capability, and will set in place continuous naval shipbuilding as. The service’s requirement is 20 frigates and it has the option to bring in a second yard to build the small combatants. The contract was awarded through a full and open competition, with multiple offers received. On April 30, 2020, the Navy awarded the Detail Design and Construction (DD&C) contract for 10 ships (one base-year ship and nine option ships) and obligated funding for FFG 62 to Marinette Marine Corporation (also known as Fincantieri Marinette Marine) in Marinette, Wisconsin. These capabilities include an Enterprise Air Surveillance Radar (EASR), Baseline Ten (BL10) Aegis Combat System, an Mk 41 Vertical Launch System, communications systems, countermeasures, and added capability in the electronic warfare/information operations area with design flexibility for future growth. SEA will build and install communications systems for the Royal New Zealand Navys Te Kaha and Te Mana (pictured) frigates under phase two of the MoDs Frigate Sustainment - Communications project. 1 The contract guarantees that Fincantieri will build the lead ship (the first ship designed for a class) and gives the Navy options to build as many as nine additional ships. FFG 62 will be fielded with multi-mission capability to conduct air warfare, anti-submarine warfare, surface warfare, electromagnetic maneuver warfare. On April 30, 2020, the Navy awarded Fincantieri Marinette Marine a contract to build the Navy’s new surface combatant, a guided missile frigate long designated as FFG (X).
